Waterjet Technology:  Pictorial

RICHEL, Inc.

(STONE, March 15, 2001)

The material used to make this story board was all flame finished granite.

The black was 1 ¼” thick and the other colors were ¾”.  The voids were filled with a leveling compound and a ¾” solid black slab was epoxied to the back.

Michael R. Golden Design, Inc. organized and commissioned the project to be installed in New York City’s Gracie Mansion Park.  The job included three story board panels.  The size of these were 30” x 30”, 42” x 42” and 60” x 42”.

The original artwork was converted into extremely intricate CAD files by Richel, Inc., totaling between 30 and 40 hours in preparation.

Bob Balchunas, owner of Advanced Cutting Services in Roselle, N.J. was chosen to do the waterjet cutting of these panels.  The equipment used to cut the job was a 12’ x 12’ ESAB Hydrocut gantry with a 50,000 psi pump.  An Ingersoll Rand Autoline cutting head was used with a 0.015” sapphire orifice and a 0.040” nozzle.  The project was supported on the cutting table by 5/8” plywood, doubled to prevent the very small pieces from dropping into the waterjet tank.  The three panels represented more than 100 hours of cutting.
